Rare Tornado in Puerto Rico

A rare tornado (pictured above) took place near Moca, Puerto Rico this past Sunday, August 7th. The National Weather Service in San Juan has rated the tornado an EF-0, with estimated maximum winds of 75 mph.  They estimate that the tornado was on the ground for 0.8 of a mile, with a maximum width of 80 yards.

According to the survey and other reports, "a large amount" of trees were uprooted and/or snapped, a parked truck was overturned, a few power poles were snapped, and several windows were broken due to flying debris.

Tornadoes are relatively rare in Puerto Rico.  In fact, since 1950, only 14 tornadoes (including this one) have been reported on the island.  Most are usually relatively weak, EF-0 or EF-1 intensity.
